Center Spotlight: YWCA of Brooklyn

YWCA

Organization Name: YWCA of Brooklyn
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Date of center founding: 7/2010
Mission & services: The YWCA of Brooklyn serves over 10,000 women each year in its mission to eliminate racism and empower women. With New York City ranked the least affordable housing market for low-income people, homelessness at an all-time high, and rising real estate prices, the YWCA responded by expanding its program to become the largest provider of affordable housing in downtown Brooklyn. The expansion included construction of a community center dedicated to social justice initiatives specifically focusing on gender and race providing office space for 10 nonprofits and free community space.

A recent success includes the opening of a renovated theater, which will increase access to the arts in the neighborhood. Praised by local elected officials, the YWCA's new facilities and programming contribute to local economic and community development, increasing foot traffic and providing much needed social services and programming. Read more about the YWCA's tenants and programming.
