2009 Building Opportunities Conference

Over 200 leaders from the nonprofit, philanthropic, private, and public sectors convened in Washington D.C. May 18-20 for the largest event in North America dedicated to creating and managing shared workspace and services for the nonprofit sector. Participants came from diverse centers and organizations in 28 states, 4 Canadian provinces, the UK and Beijing, China. NCN honored 21 new nonprofit centers that have opened since 2007 and 50 centers celebrating milestone anniversaries. A survey of 100 nonprofit centers at the conference showcases the deep impact of shared spaces and services. Altogether, the programs serve 4,500 nonprofit organizations annually and touch 2.6 million lives across North America.

Jennifer Magalhaes, a former legal clerk at NCN partner Dewey & LeBoeuf, is offering pro bono legal services to nonprofit centers in the Washington, DC area. Her consulting services include negotiation and drafting of agreements, lease review, legal research, and assistance with due diligence in connection with real estate acquisitions. Grants Encourage Community Enhancements
Tom's of Maine Community Sponsorships will provide grants of $20,000 each to five nonprofit organizations in order to enhance their community projects. A wide range of community projects are eligible for support, including environmental initiatives, health and human service programs, community events, etc. Deadline: August 30, 2009. Gannett Foundation Community Action Grants
Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to nonprofits working to improve their communities in locations where Gannett owns a newspaper or broadcast station. Deadline: August 17, 2009. For guidelines and applications, visit the Gannet Foundation website.

The Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, creator of the Alliance Center in Denver, Co, is accepting applications for an Office Manager and a Development Manager. The Office Manager is responsible for the organization's smooth and efficient operations and provides a public face for the Alliance.  The Development Manager overseas grant requests and donor development processes to enable funding of the Alliance operations, projects, and program areas. Al Sigl

Al Sigl Community of Agencies

Location: Rochester, NY

Doors Opened: 1962

Mission / Purpose: Al Sigl is a collaborative community network that provides cost-effective real estate, business services and philanthropic support to independent human service agencies that serve children and adults with disabilities and special needs. 

History: Al Sigl was established in 1962 to provide facilities for agencies servicing people with disabilities.  It opened its first barrier free 150,000 square foot building in l968.  Al Sigl has expanded to enable the growth of its agencies; it currently owns and manages over 650,000 square feet on six campuses in the greater Rochester area.  Al Sigl member and affiliate agencies annually serve tens of thousands of children and adults with disabilities and special needs. In their 47 year history Al Sigl has conducted four capital campaigns to raise funds for facilities, equipment and an endowment to benefit Al Sigl and the member agencies.
