Study Unveiled:
MarinSpace leads a research on nonprofits and
shared spaces
MarinSpace, a nonprofit center in San Rafael, CA, presented findings to over 20 real estate and nonprofit directors on nonprofit real estate trends. The study surveyed 700 to 800 of Marin county's more than 2,000 registered nonprofit organizations, excluding churches, schools, social and leisure clubs and other groups. The average nonprofit rent of $1.40 to $1.50 per square foot is about 30 to 40 percent lower than commercial rates, according to the survey. With a small percentage of agencies owning their sites, the study suggests groups examine leasing opportunities and an emerging trend of multi-tenant spaces. For more information, contact Shelley Hamilton.
New Path Foundation's Common Roof expands to Central Ontario
New Path Foundation is creating its second nonprofit center in the City of Orillia, located in central Ontario, Canada. The Orillia Common Roof site has been purchased and plans are underway for the construction of a 36,000 square foot facility located on 2.5 acres right downtown. The Common Roof – a “one-stop shop” resource center for children, youth, families, and adults requiring health, social assistance, and other human services – is built upon a social enterprise foundation, and is structured to support tenant organizations to redirect savings towards their mission fulfillment. For more information about the Common Roof project, contact Glen Newby.
D.C. Groups Seek Place to Call Home
Jovid Foundation is leading the efforts to find a shared facility in the Washington, DC region for a band of nonprofits focused on workforce development for the under- and
unemployed D.C. residents. Co-locating training providers and organizations helping the needy will streamline services for people who need them. Read the full article here.

Center Profile Spotlights
During a time when conserving resources is especially crucial, we would like to recognize two nonprofit centers that serve as great examples of shared services. These centers, though their missions may be different, are all spreading the message that sharing spaces, staff, and other resources will likely increase the efficiency of the organizations involved. These shared service centers decrease the expense of redundant services and increase investment in program-related activities to fulfill their missions. |
