NCN Makes a Quick Stop Home
After spreading the word about shared nonprofit workspace in Atlanta, D.C., Milwaukee and Madison, The NonprofitCenters Network (NCN) came back to San Francisco last month to put on a half-day workshop at Fort Mason Center specifically on operating Multi-tenant Nonprofit Centers.
NCN's membership suggested the one-of-a-kind program for Community Building - Bay Area. It included planning effectively for maintenance and renovations presented by Kim Frentz of Ventura Partners. And incorporating green design and operating principles into that process. Architect Melissa Mizell of Gensler was on hand to share her interior design expertise, and Property Manager, Becky Bacon of ECB Management Services, shared how she helped Thoreau Center win the "Commercial Recycler of the Year Award" two years in a row! Thirty Bay Area nonprofit center practitioners and partners attended this great event.
Save the Date for our next half day Community Building - Bay Area workshop November 9th!

Boys and Girls Club of South Puget Sound Breaks Ground!
Congratulations to NCN member, Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound! On August 8, they broke ground in Lakewood on a new $5.7 million center caked HOPE Center. Unwilling to continue to turn kids away when their current location reached maximum capacity, the Boys & Girls Club, in partnership with the school district and local community members, launched HOPE Center, promising adequate space for children and for the community at large. The center will be the new home for the Boys & Girls Club's Lakewood Branch and other nonprofit agencies. Its design will promote resource sharing and collaboration. HOPE Center is expected to open in summer 2007. Read more about HOPE Center and listen as kids talk about the old building and share hopes for their new center with stories and photos.
Alliance for Sustainable Colorado Saves Water and on their Water Bill
Last month, NCN member, Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, was featured in the Denver Business Journal for water conservation efforts that dropped their water bill by almost 80%! After replacing all the plumbing fixtures in their six-story office building last January, the staff was shocked by the dramatic drop in water usage. In 2005, the Alliance Center Building averaged a water consumption rate of over 100 gallons per day per employee. After the plumbing retrofits, the average water consumption rate dropped to about 5 gallons and is now saving the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado over $400 per month! Read more about how they did it!

Members! NCN has Instituted Conference Call Meetings just for YOU!
Recognizing how much they gained from informal conversations about their MTNCs, Tim Wintermute of Hannan House and Neel Hajra of NEW Center launched and hosted NCN's first conference call for mid-continent members last June 7th. The call enabled members to trade strategies for tenants defaulting on rent, how to market centers effectively, and also assessed the value of tenant finder's fees. Said one member, "As a new member of NCN, the conference call proved to be a beneficial networking activity as now I feel more comfortable calling my colleagues when issues and questions arise. As a new manager to a co-location it is also good to know what other models there are in the country. I look forward to participating in a future conference call as well as in person at a conference where I will already have a group of names to put together with faces!"
If this sounds like the type of conversation you need to have, you're in luck. More calls are being planned! Be sure you're on our mailing list for information on the next call!
