Have you thought of sharing office space with other nonprofits to save money, achieve greater efficiency, and increase collaboration? What about sharing back office services as an alternative to a merger?  As our cities are hit hard by the economic downturn, job loss, and disinvestment, nonprofit organizations are responding by co-locating under one roof and by sharing back office services to gain greater stability and cut costs. Nonprofit centers help revitalize blighted neighborhoods, stimulate economic activity, and support coordinated service delivery. This interactive full-day training is designed to lead you through the complex processes of creating a mission-enhancing, financially sustainable facility.  Hosted by United Way of Greater Houston, The NonprofitCenters Network, and Tides.

NCN Hosts Bay Area Nonprofit Center Leaders Breakfast Gathering at MEDA
On March 3, 2010, NCN joined the Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) in hosting a breakfast gathering for leaders of existing nonprofit centers located in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Brought together over bagels at MEDA’s brand new center, Plaza Adelante, 35 innovative minds discussed the challenges they have encountered operating a nonprofit center, and sharing best practices and lessons learned on the issues of leasing and shared services.  NCN hopes to make this a regularly occurring event.  See photos of the gathering.

The Alliance Center provides office and meeting space to 30 nonprofit organizations, and is an example of preservation and conservation that maintains historic integrity while adding "green" features. CSI New Building Centre for Social Innovation Purchases New Building Downtown
The Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) is delighted to announce the purchase of a new building in downtown Toronto!  CSI currently operates a 23,000-square-foot facility that provides shared workspace to over 180 full- and part-time members. The new 35,000-square-foot building will be CSI’s second location and represents the organization’s first foray into an ownership position (CSI rents its current space).  The new building offers CSI an opportunity to meet growing demand and to expand its operations and impact in Toronto. The new site will offer a mix of office space, permanent desks, and hot desks, and will include several thematic incubators intended to support the start-up of a variety of social change projects. CSI’s goal is to open its doors in September 2010.
Development Idea More Than Co-working Project
A new collaborative idea between Springboard Innovation and motiveSpace could be the newest way for start-ups to finance construction of space. Hatch: An Innovation and Incubation Lab is envisioned as a 30,000-square-foot space with a mix of for-profit and nonprofit businesses occupying office space and retail space.  Directors Sara Garrett of motiveSpace and Amy Pearl of Springboard Innovation estimate the project will cost between $6 and $8 million, and are looking into what services the tenants could offer to encourage the community to buy into the building.

Center Spotlight
Organization Name:  Saints Joseph’s Center for Community Service
Location: Clayton, Delaware
Doors Opened: First built in 1896 as the St. Joseph’s Industrial School for boys. It later sat virtually dormant for nearly a quarter of a century before a group of local citizens acquired it and restored the historic buildings for community use in 1997.
Mission & History: Hidden in the rural landscape just north of downtown Clayton, Delaware, St. Joseph's Center for Community Service is a sprawling 222-acre property consisting of a 20-acre campus area, agricultural fields, open meadows, wetlands, forest, and a vast array of wildlife which is currently under study. There are six buildings of varying size and amenities, including the Drexel Campus Center with three wings of classrooms, a full size gym, and wholly outfitted cafeteria. The jewel among these buildings is St. Joseph's Church, built in part by the first residents of the industrial school and undergoing a complete restoration. More broadly, the Center serves residents of Kent and New Castle Counties, providing sports, recreation, classes, and events for every member of the family. There is still plenty of space available for lease to nonprofit program providers. Please visit their website at www.saintjosephscenter.org.
