The NonprofitCenters Network is On the Move!

Since March, The NonprofitCenters Network has been on the road educating folks on creating and operating quality nonprofit facilities!

Atlanta, GA
Our first stop was the 7th Gathering of the Social Enterprise Alliance in Atlanta. China Brotsky and Mina Kim presented "Strategic Considerations in Creating and Operating Multi-tenant Nonprofit Centers" with NCN member, Peggy Eagan. Peggy runs The Children and Family Services Center, a nonprofit center in Charlotte, North Carolina. While there, China and Mina also caught up with two other Georgia based NCN members, Marty Sonenshine of Anverse, Inc. and Sarah Dimond and Vicky Warr of The Center for Family Resources. Both successfully opened their nonprofit centers within the past year. Read more about it below!

Washington, DC
Just one week later, NCN headed to Washington DC to hold our day-long workshop, Community Building. The workshop covered creating and financing nonprofit centers, and how to develop shared services programs and operate buildings in a "green" way. Not only was the workshop packed with information, but also with attendees. The response was extremely positive. Said one attendee, "Very timely topic. Excellent quality of presenters AND participants!" A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, Brody Weiser Burns, Staubach, and NEW for making the event possible. Also, a special thank you to our speakers and volunteers, and of course to our fabulous partners, Nonprofit Finance Fund DC-MD-VA and Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington who so graciously hosted us.

Madison and Milwaukee, WI
Finally, today and tomorrow, China Brotsky will be in Wisconsin to deliver a keynote address on strategic considerations for nonprofit centers at Moving Forward: Solutions for Nonprofit Leadership. For more information, check-out their conference brochure!

And we're not done yet! Nationwide demand and our success in DC has inspired us to take our Community Building workshops to Denver and Los Angeles while replicating it in the Bay Area! Be on the lookout for more information on these workshops, or visit our website!

Two New Nonprofit Centers from Two NCN Members in Georgia!

By Marty Sonenshine
Executive Director, Anverse, Inc.

Anverse, Inc, a private operating foundation based in Cartersville, Georgia, recently opened The Carroll Non-Profit Center in Westminster, Maryland. The 40,000 Square foot 3-story building opened its doors in February with 20 tenants! The largest tenant is Head Start Daycare, which is run by Catholic Charities. They occupy an entire floor and serve over 100 kids. The center provides rent-free office space to all tenants, although tenants are required to pay a per square foot charge to cover the cost of utilities. The center also provides over 1800 square feet of meeting space that is also available to any nonprofit organization in the community. Thanks to everyone who provided us with information in our research phase of this project! NCN has been a great resource for the staff of Anverse and the Non-profit Center. If not for NCN, we would have never met as many people who are already operating similar types of facilities, and the national Collaborating for Success conference in San Francisco in 2005 was especially beneficial.

CFO, The Center for Family Resources

The mission of The Center for Family Resources (CFR) is to strengthen individuals, families, and communities to become self-sufficient by providing temporary financial assistance, housing for low-income and homeless families and education and training to individuals and communities to increase economic capacity and personal growth. In 2003, CFR had outgrown its location. Planned redevelopment threatened the feasibility of expanding on the existing site. The organization's leadership initiated the process of determining CFR's current and future requirements and assembling partnerships to accomplish a dream: a community of care, under a common roof. The 2003 and 2005 conferences presented by The NonprofitCenters Network proved to be a valuable resource as we worked to complete the project. The facility opened in July, 2005. It is 60,000 square-feet and sits on 4.8 acres of land, including 10,900 square feet of open green space. It accommodates CFR's expanded programmatic needs, an early childhood learning center, leased office space for other nonprofits, conference, and training facilities. Renovating a vacant building built in 1957, the beautiful new building anchors the redevelopment of a major corridor into the city of Marietta.
