COLLABORATING FOR SUCCESS: A Conference on Creating and Operating Multi-Tenant Nonprofit Centers was held May 17-18, 2001 at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. It was the first national conference to address this issue. It provided comprehensive information and tools for developing and managing multi-tenant facilities for all types of nonprofit organizations. The conference explored the policy and business decisions necessary to meet the real estate needs of nonprofit organizations. It also showcased concrete examples of how specific projects have achieved success and served the needs of their local communities.
The conference featured over 50 presenters from across the nation including experts in real estate development, financing, and management, as well as nonprofit and philanthropic leaders who are operating, or directly involved in, successful centers from around the country.
More than 230 participants representing 20 states from nonprofit organizations, real estate firms, foundations, academia, government agencies and financial institutions gathered to network and learn from each other during the 2-day event. Funding for the conference was obtained from a balance of corporate and philanthropic sponsors and direct registration fees. (conference demographics | evaluation testimonials)
The conference generated an impressive amount of information and technical resources. Conference evaluations indicated an enormous amount of enthusiasm for ongoing follow-up, networking, and access to additional resources. In addition to presenter handouts and materials, at the conference we collected over 4 hours of digital video, 12 hours of workshop audio, numerous photographs, and over 15 large wall chart size graphic notes, and over 85 conference evaluations identifying the specific follow-up needs of the participants. In effect, we have generated the most comprehensive archive of resource information on creating and operating multi-tenant nonprofit centers in the nation.
