| Description: |
The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York), the leadership organization for New York City's not-for-profit theatres, has been at the forefront of developing shared office space facilities for use by the not-for-profit theatre and arts communities. Our first project, South Oxford Space, is located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn and is home to 20 small theatre companies. Based on its success, we embarked on Spaces at 520, a larger and more ambitious project in mid-town Manhattan. What began as 32,000 sq. ft. of raw space has become a beautiful facility which provides permanent offices to 25 organizations. In addition, there are a number of shared amenities including a kitchen, copy room, and three rehearsal studios, one of which can be used for meetings and other events. The path to realizing this project was difficult, but ultimately inspiring. It brought out the best of the myriad people who worked on it and, in the words of New York City Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate Levin, "...could serve as a model, not only for cultural organizations but also for a wide range of non-profits." |
